bio:

Gianfranco Palumbo is associate professor in Manufacturing technologies and systems at the Politecnico di Bari, where he teaches material engineering and processing technologies in the Mechanical Engineering degree; the total amount of teaching activity is 12 ECT/year. Since 2001 has been involved in tutoring activities for about 100 master degrees.
Gianfranco Palumbo got his master degree in Mechanical Engineering (110/110) on 1998 and the Ph.D in the field of Advanced Manufacturing Systems on 2001, both at the Politecnico of Bari. He worked as production engineer in FIAT OM - Forklifts in Modugno (Bari) from November 2000 to May 2001. Since June 2002 he is full time Researcher at the Politecnico of Bari and on February 2015 he becomes Associate Professor at the Politecnico of Bari.
Gianfranco Palumbo is Associate with the Institute of Photonics and Nanotechnologies of the National Council of Research, U.O.S. Bari - Physics Department M. Merlin - Bari, Italy. Gianfranco Palumbo has a continuous scientific production (SCOPUS Author ID: 16310436500) publishing in largely diffused International Journals with good Impact Factor like J. of Mater. Proc. Techn., Int. J. of Mach. Tools & Manuf., Mater. & Des., Mater. Science and Eng. A, Int. J. of Advanced Manuf. Technology, J. of Manuf. Processes. He has attended to 45 International Conferences, mainly in the field of Metal Forming (NUMIFORM, ESAFORM, SHEMET, ICTP, METAL FORMING). His main research topics are:

  • Material characterization (mechanical, thermo-mechanical and technological characterization), ranging from the plastic (in cold and hot conditions) to the superplastic behaviour of materials (mainly steel and light alloys, such as magnesium, aluminium and titanium alloys). All the research activities have been conducted using an experimental approach, by means of the available equipment (see section 4.5). In particular, as concerns the characterization in the superplastic field, the research activities have been mainly focused on innovative characterization and modelling methods to be used for superplastic metal alloys.
  • Conventional and innovative sheet metal forming processes, using a numerical/experimental approach. In particular, the attention has been focused on: (i) Sheet Hydroforming, in cold (SHF) and warm (WHF) condition; (ii) HydroMechanical Deep Drawing (HMDD); (iii) SuperPlastic Forming (SPF), using both monolithic and Tailor Welded Blanks; (iv) Warm Deep Drawing (WDD); (v) Single Point Incremental Forming (SPIF). Investigated materials are: deep drawing steels (HMDD), aluminum alloy (SHF, WHF, WDD, SPF), Magnesium alloys (WDD, SPF) Titanium alloys (SPIF, SPF).
  • Finite Element simulation of manufacturing processes, including surface treatments. In particular, the above mentioned innovative sheet metal forming processes, both in the plastic and superplastic field, have been investigated. In addition, laser material processes (like laser cladding, laser hardening and laser remelting) were also investigated.

Gianfranco Palumbo is the Scientific Coordinator of the lab "Advanced Forming and Manufacturing" (http://afmlab.poliba.it), which is part of the research network TRASFORMA (http://www.poliba.it/trasforma), and of the lab "Optimization of Manufacturing Processes by Numerical Simulations", created using funds from the research project "Innovative technologies for the manufacturing of turbo machines to be used in very hard working conditions" (acronym: SMATI), co-funded by MIUR.
Gianfranco Palumbo takes part to many research activities within projects financed by private companies, by Italian Institutions and by Politecnico of Bari. In particular, he is actually the Principal Investigator of the PRIN project 2012 (Bioforming) and the Scientific Coordinator of the Bilateral Project between Italy (CNR) and Turkey (TUBITAK) about the development of innovative Mg alloys. He is also the Technical reference in Contracts commissioned by industries (MASTETR, FONTANA GROUP, OMER).
Gianfranco Palumbo spent, as invited scientist, short term mobilities for research at IMR (Shenyang, China) and at IFUM (Hannover, Germany) and has been member of Scientific Committees of International Conferences (NUMIFORM2013, IDDRG2015). Gianfranco Palumbo has reviewed 78 Pre Publication Reviews for 16 journals in the field of manufacturing process and materials engineering and processing (https://publons.com/author/1173579/gianfranco-palumbo). In addition, since 2015 he is part of the Editorial Board of the journal "Advances in Materials Science and Engineering", which is a peer-reviewed, open access journal that publishes original research articles in the areas of materials science and engineering (Impact Factor of 1.010 according to 2015 Journal Citation Reports).
