bio:
Marco D. de Tullio is Assistant Professor of Fluid Dynamics at the Politecnico di Bari, where he teaches courses of Fundamental Fluid Dynamics and Turbulence. He graduated in Mechanical Engineering at the Politecnico di Bari summa cum laude on April 2003, and in 2007 he got his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering. From 2003 he has been a member of the research staff at the Centre of Excellence for Computational Mechanics of the Politecnico di Bari. He spent several months as Visiting Researcher at the Center for Turbulence Research of The Stanford University (CA, USA). He has given several invited lectures on the Immersed Boundary Method in Italy and USA, and he is referee for several journals of his research area. In 2013 he has been awarded by the Italian Association of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (AIMETA) with the “AIMETA Junior" (for Italian scientists under 40) Prize for Fluid Mechanics, for his outstanding research results in the area.
Marco's research is in the area of computational fluid dynamics and is focused on the development and improvement of the immersed boundary technique for the simulation of a large variety of complex problems, involving moving and deforming geometries. Concerning the biomedical applications, in the last years he studied the blood flow through bileaflet mechanical heart valves, considering fluid and structure interaction as well as the interaction of the blood with the deformable walls of the vessels or prostheses and then evaluating the damage induced by the prostheses on the suspended particles in the blood (e.g. hemolysis). The immersed boundary method developed for compressible flows has been used for the simulation of flows of industrial interest, ranging from slightly compressible to supersonic flows, including turbomachinery and aerospace flows. Recently he extended the research activity to the simulation of pyroclastic density currents over complex terrain topographies.
